Why Does Hair Go Frizzy?

The science behind frizz and what you can do to keep your hair smoother.

If you've ever stepped outside on a humid day only to find your smooth hair suddenly becoming fluffy or unruly, you're not alone.

Frizz is one of the most common concerns we hear about at Salon Cabelo. The good news is that frizz isn't something you simply have to put up with. Once you understand why it happens, it's much easier to manage.

Let's take a closer look at what causes frizz and what you can do to keep your hair smoother and healthier.

What is frizz?

Frizz happens when the outer layer of your hair, known as the cuticle, lifts instead of lying flat.

When the cuticle is smooth, light reflects evenly from the surface of the hair, making it look shiny and healthy. When it lifts, moisture from the air can enter the hair shaft, causing the strands to swell and move in different directions. This is what creates the fluffy or frizzy appearance.

Why does humidity make hair frizzy?

Hair naturally absorbs moisture from the air.

On humid days there is more moisture in the atmosphere, so hair absorbs more water than usual. As the hair swells, it loses its smooth shape and becomes harder to control.

This is why your hair can look perfectly smooth when you leave the house but change completely once you're outside.

Is frizz a sign of damaged hair?

Not always.

Naturally curly or textured hair is often more prone to frizz because the cuticle doesn't always lie completely flat.

However, hair that has been coloured, lightened, heat styled or exposed to the weather may also become more porous. Porous hair absorbs moisture more easily, making it more likely to frizz.

Healthy hair can still become frizzy, but damaged hair often struggles to stay smooth for long.

Everyday habits that can make frizz worse

Sometimes small habits can make a bigger difference than you realise.

These include:

• Rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel.

• Using very high heat when blow drying.

• Skipping heat protection before styling.

• Overusing heated tools.

• Using products that aren't suited to your hair type.

Making a few simple changes to your routine can often improve how your hair behaves every day.

How can you reduce frizz?

While no product can stop humidity altogether, you can help your hair stay smoother by focusing on hydration and protecting the cuticle.

Some simple tips include:

• Use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair type.

• Apply a heat protectant before blow drying or using heated styling tools.

• Dry your hair gently rather than rubbing it with a towel.

• Book regular trims to keep the ends healthy.

• Consider an intensive treatment if your hair feels dry or lacks shine.

At Salon Cabelo, we often recommend personalised home care because every head of hair is different. What works for one person may not be the best solution for another.

Can a professional blow dry help?

Absolutely.

A professional blow dry doesn't just style the hair. The right technique helps smooth the cuticle, creating a sleeker finish that is more resistant to humidity.

Using the correct brush, airflow and products can make a noticeable difference to how long your style lasts.

When home care isn't enough

For some people, especially those with naturally frizzy, coarse, or difficult to manage hair, the right home care routine makes a big difference. However, if you're still struggling with frizz every day, a professional smoothing treatment may be worth considering.

At Salon Cabelo, we offer the FABRIC Keratin Blow Dry, a smoothing treatment that helps reduce frizz, improve manageability, and leave hair feeling softer and shinier for up to four months. Unlike some traditional keratin treatments, FABQiC is designed to smooth the hair while maintaining natural movement, so your hair still feels like your hair, just easier to manage.

If you're unsure whether a smoothing treatment is right for you, we'd be happy to talk you through the options during a complimentary consultation.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why is my hair frizzy even when it's not raining?

Humidity isn't the only cause of frizz. Dryness, heat damage, brushing technique, and the products you use can all affect how smooth your hair looks.

  • Can frizz ever be completely eliminated?

Frizz can usually be reduced, but it's not always possible or necessary to remove it completely. The goal is healthy, manageable hair that works with your natural texture rather than against it.

  • Does brushing make frizz worse?

It can. Brushing dry curly or textured hair often separates the strands and creates more volume and frizz. Using the right brush at the right time makes a big difference.

  • Which Aveda products help with frizz?

The best products depend on your hair type and the cause of the frizz. During your appointment, we'll recommend the most suitable routine for your hair.
